Fruit Types and Seed Dispersal
A fruit is a mature ovary. It protects seeds. It also helps those seeds leave the parent plant. Botanists group fruits by structure. Dispersal then explains how seeds travel.
A simple fruit forms from one ovary. A tomato is a berry. A mango is a drupe with a stony inner layer. A pea pod is a legume. It splits along two seams. A poppy capsule opens by pores or slits. A sunflower “seed” is an achene. The wall stays dry and closed.
An aggregate fruit forms from many ovaries in one flower. A raspberry is a cluster of small drupes. A strawberry carries achenes on a swollen receptacle. A multiple fruit forms from a whole inflorescence. A pineapple and a fig follow that plan.
Fleshy fruits attract animals. Birds swallow berries and later drop the seeds. Mammals eat mangoes and figs. The hard coat often survives the gut. That journey can place a seed far from the parent. It can also add a dose of fertiliser.
Dry fruits use other tactics. Many legumes explode when the pod dries. Touch-me-not fruits do the same. Wind lifts light achenes, samaras, and plumed seeds. Maple wings spin. Dandelion plumes drift. Water can carry coconuts and other buoyant fruits along a shore.
Hooks and barbs hitch a ride. Xanthium and many grasses cling to fur or cloth. Humans then move those seeds along paths and fields. Ants collect seeds with oil-rich elaiosomes. They discard the seed in a nest waste pile. That spot can be safer for germination.
Seed structure matches the route. A fleshy coat pays an animal. A wing or pappus pays the wind. A tough stone protects against teeth. A light corky wall floats. Therefore, fruit type and dispersal method evolved together.
Dispersal matters for ecology. It reduces crowding under the parent. It helps plants colonise gaps after fire or flood. It also spreads weeds into farms and cities. Crop breeders watch these traits too. They want fruits that stay on the plant until harvest. Wild plants more often need to scatter.
Study of fruits links morphology to movement. Look at the wall, the seed, and the agent that carries it. That simple reading explains much of plant distribution.
