Green house effect The amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is critically important in maintaining the earth’s temperature. Carbon dioxide absorbs infrared rays, and allows heat to stay in the atmosphere, rather than escaping into space. How much heat is retained depends on how much CO2 is in the air. The greater the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere, the warmer the earth becomes, because of the greenhouse effect. The greenhouse effect occurs because CO2 in the atmosphere acts as do the glass wall of a greenhouse.
