Solid waste can also create environmental health problems. It consists mainly of non-hazardous materials such as paper and plastic packaging material, glass, food scraps and other residues. However, it generally also contains small quantities of hazardous substances such as paints, medicines, solvents, cleaning materials and batteries, leading to potential chemical exposures. Production of household and municipal solid waste continues to increase worldwide, both in absolute and per capita terms.
