Biotic Potential: The maximum growth rate, which a population could achieve in unlimited environment, is referred to as that population’s biotic potential. In reality, of course, no organism ever reaches its biotic potential, because of one or more factors which limit growth long before population size attains its theoretical maximum. Such limiting factors include: food shortage, disease, competition, predation, accumulation of toxic wastes, etc.
