The transfer of energy through a biological community (or an ecosystem) begins when the energy of sunlight is fixed in a green plant by photosynthesis. Photosynthesis coverts radiant energy into useful, high-quality chemical energy in the bonds that hold together organic molecules. The transfer of this captured energy from organism to organism is basic to the functioning of ecosystems.
